The Audit Survival Guide: Is Your Facility Truly "Audit-Ready"?
In the industrial and food processing worlds, an audit isn't just a meeting—it’s a stress test for your entire safety program. Whether you are preparing for an SQF, BRC, HACCP, or OSHA inspection, your magnets are often a primary point of scrutiny.
Are your magnets "silent guardians" protecting your process, or are they a compliance liability waiting to be discovered? Use this checklist to verify your readiness before the auditor walks through your doors.
1. The Paper Trail (Annual Certification)
The single biggest red flag for an auditor is a missing or expired certificate.
The Rule: Magnets should be professionally tested and certified at least once every 12 months.
The Requirement: Ensure you have a digital or physical folder containing current certificates for every magnet on your floor. If a certificate is dated more than a year ago, it’s time to schedule a re-test.
2. NIST-Traceable Calibration Proof
It isn’t enough to say you tested your magnets; you have to prove the equipment used to test them was accurate.
The Check: Your testing partner must provide proof that their load cells (for lift magnets) or pull-test scales (for food grade) are NIST-traceable. Without this, your internal tests may be dismissed by a rigorous auditor.
3. Physical Integrity & Hygiene
Visual inspections are the first thing an auditor will do.
For Lift Magnets: Look for cracked welds, bent lifting lugs, or missing capacity labels.
For Food Safety: Check for "pitting" or corrosion on stainless steel surfaces where bacteria could hide. Ensure magnets are cleaned on a documented schedule; a saturated magnet is an ineffective magnet.
4. Corrective Action Logs
If a magnet failed in the past year, do you have a record of what happened next?
The Pro-Tip: Auditors love to see "Corrective Action" logs. If a magnet was pulled from service, show the report that proves it was replaced or repaired and re-certified by a 3rd party like MagnetCert.
Don't Guess—Certify.
Audit preparation shouldn't be a game of chance. At MagnetCert, we provide the "Audit Survival Kit": unbiased 3rd-party testing and the high-fidelity documentation that auditors want to see.
